“Sure. Speak to you soon.”

Silence fell after the click that indicated Esti had disconnected until Tyler's heavy “Fuck.

What have we gotten ourselves into?” broke in.

Kai was quick to assure him. “It's not your fault, not your doing. I think Wilkinson's after something in that village. We have to find it before he does.”

“Night diving,” Zoe said heavily. “You want me to get ready? With two mermen looking after me, it should be fairly safe.” The very last thing she wanted to do was wreck her perfect site by searching for treasure, but she had no choice.

“We'll do it. You stay here.”

“No.” She couldn't let that happen. “It's my site, my responsibility. You can make sure I come to no harm, but I want to make sure that dig remains viable. I've worked too hard to let it go now.”

“No.” Kai faced her, his hands on his hips.

“Yes. I go, or it doesn't happen.” She'd only stay in the house feeling helpless and feeble.

She'd fought all her life against that.

Kai stared at her, his blue eyes hard, but after a moment he sighed and lifted his hand to his temples. “Okay, you win. You go, but if we want you out, you get out, no arguments. Your safety has to come first. Agreed?”

“Agreed.”

Weariness swept over her. As soon as she felt it, Tyler's arm went around her shoulders, and he held her close. Kai slipped his hand under hers so he could take it in a warm clasp. He stood and tugged. “Time for bed.” He glanced over his shoulder at Laurie and smiled. “You'd better stay here. The press already knows that we're friends.”

Laurie gave a bark of laughter. “After that fucking awful bachelor auction last year, I should think they do! My agent went insane when you bought me. Do you know how hard he worked to restore my status as a het sex fiend?”

“I thought you fired him.”
